History of Liang Court

Liang Court is “the former building” that will pave the way to Canninghill Piers. It is situated in the neighbourhood of Singapore River, Clarke Quay and River Valley Road. The mixed-use complex featured Somerset Residences and hotel Novotel Clarke Quay.

A partnership between Daimaru Inc and Wuthelam Group developed Liang Court. It opened its doors in January 1984 as the first big mall along River Valley Road. Among the first prominent occupants include the Daimaru – a Japanese department store chain, TungLok Signatures-  a Chinese restaurant, Kinokuniya – a Japanese bookstore chain, and over 60 speciality tenants.

Somerset Liang Court services apartments and Hotel New Otani rising 25-storey are on Liang Court. Various tenants entered, changed ownership, and left Liang Court due to restructuring and decline in sales. Among the notable changes is the closure of Daimaru in 2003 with the electronics chain Audio House taking over the department store and Meidi-Ya taking over the supermarket section. Towards the end of 2004,  Accor Hotels took over the management of  Hotel New Otani and renamed it to Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay.

In 1999, ownership of the mall changed to Pidemco Land and later to the Asia Retail Management Fund in 2006 (ARMF). It underwent refurbishment in 2017 with the works finishing in 2010. In 2013, Uniqlo opened on the ground floor.

Existing tenants like Kinokuniya closed down after the expiry of their 32-year lease, with other restaurants and shops exiting in the same year. In 2019, the mall was sold to a partnership between City Developments Limited and CapitaLand due to declining sales.

The consortium together with Ascott REIT announced the redevelopment of Canninghill Piers in November 2019. The new development, Canninghill Piers, is expected to open its doors in phases between 2024 and 2025.

By April 2020, all the occupants of the shops serviced apartments, and the hotel had vacated the building.
